The campus-scale opportunity
College students are estimated to generate roughly 640 lbs of move-out waste each per year. Across Vanderbilt's ~7,000 undergraduates, that's on the order of ~2,032 metric tons of potential waste every single year — a mountain that campus-wide reuse can cut into. These are estimates, but the scale of the opportunity is real.
How we estimate impact
Impact figures use per-item factors by category (average item weight for waste diverted; embodied-carbon averages for CO₂e avoided), in the spirit of EPA WARM-style waste-reduction accounting. A rehomed textbook counts its category's average weight and carbon; a rehomed mini-fridge counts its own. Realized figures come from recorded exchanges on the platform; "potential" figures apply the same factors to everything currently listed. All numbers are good-faith approximations — not audited measurements — and the campus-scale figure combines a widely-cited per-student move-out-waste estimate with Vanderbilt's approximate undergraduate enrollment.
